Set in New Orleans during the Great Depression, Hadestown follows the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Orpheus, a passionate musician, and Eurydice, an independent and resilient young woman, fall in love at first sight. Their love blossoms in spring, and flourishes in summer, but is tested when autumn comes. Hardship breeds doubt and difficult choices are made when Eurydice unknowingly signs away her soul to Hades, the King of the Underworld. Orpheus is prepared to venture to Hades and back, armed with nothing but his music, to bring Eurydice home.
Set to a beautiful score of blues, folk, jazz, and rock, Hadestown tells a poignant story of love that manages, even amongst tragedy, to find hope. This powerful sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Winner of eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, Hadestown breathes fresh new life into classic mythology.
